A clean and well-maintained mattress is key to getting a good night’s sleep. Over time, dust, dirt, and stains can accumulate, reducing the comfort and lifespan of your mattress. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you take care of your mattress and ensure it stays in top condition for years to come.

Step 1: Strip the Bed

 

Start by removing all bedding, including sheets, blankets, and pillows. This provides complete access to the mattress surface for cleaning.

Step 2: Vacuum the Mattress

 

Vacuuming your mattress is essential to eliminate dust, dirt, and debris trapped within its layers. Follow these steps:

  • Use a handheld vacuum or an upholstery tool attached to your vacuum cleaner. 
  • Start from the top and work your way down. 
  • Pay extra attention to seams, edges, and any crevices where dust gathers. 
  • If possible, vacuum both sides of the mattress for thorough cleaning. 

Step 3: Spot Clean Stains

 

Stains should be tackled promptly to prevent them from setting in. Here’s how to clean different types of stains: 

For Liquid Stains: Mix a small amount of dish soap with water and blot the stain gently with a clean cloth. 

For General Stains: Prepare a solution of one part vinegar to two parts water in a spray bottle. Lightly mist the stained area and blot it with a clean cloth. 

For Blood Stains: Use cold water and a paste made from baking soda and water. Apply, let sit for 15-20 minutes, then blot away. 

For Urine Stains: Mix white vinegar with water and sprinkle baking soda over the area. Let it sit for several hours before vacuuming.

Step 4: Deodorise the Mattress

 

To remove odours from your mattress, follow these steps: 

  • Evenly distribute a light layer of baking soda across the entire surface. 
  • Gently rub the baking soda into the fabric using a soft brush or your hands. 
  • Let the baking soda sit for 15-30 minutes (or longer) to absorb odours. 
  • Carefully vacuum the baking soda off the mattress.

Step 5: Rotate the Mattress

 

Rotating your mattress helps prevent body impressions from forming and promotes even wear and a longer lifespan. This enhances their durability and ensures consistent comfort throughout the year. Rotate your mattress 180° every three months.

Step 6: Protect Your Mattress

 

Using a mattress protector is one of the best ways to maintain cleanliness and prolong its life. A mattress protector helps shield against spills, stains, and dust mites. Be sure to wash it frequently according to the manufacturer’s care instructions.

Step 7: Let Your Mattress Dry Completely

 

Dampness can lead to mold and mildew growth. To prevent this, allow your mattress to air dry thoroughly before replacing the bedding. To speed up the drying process, place your mattress in a well-ventilated space or near a fan.
